Recently, I spent two hours in a precarious situation. From the beginning, I was on the defensive, trying to clarify my intentions, explain my actions, and correct the assumptions made about me. When people form a fixed perception of you, every word you speak becomes evidence supporting what they already believe.

In a conversation yesterday, someone claimed that the past is nothing more than a static event—something that simply exists in memory. I disagree. The past is not static. It shapes how we react, how we interpret situations, and how our nervous system responds to the world around us. Our experiences codes our lives.

When you are in spaces where people refuse to how events shape you, you are often defending yourself over and over again, and that is exhausting.

I am often expected to be strong. Aferall, “She is a Black woman.” Unshakeable. Unbothered. The assumption is that words don’t hurt me, that criticism doesn’t land, that pressure doesn’t accumulate, but they are wrong.

I am deeply sensitive. I move with integrity, and it cuts deeply when someone mischaracterising who I stand for as a person.

Sitting in that meeting, I reached a quiet realisation. I’m not going to lie, it was loud at first (I know, you already expected that because tone). For a moment there, I got so frustrated as someone in a formal setting accused me of lying and misleading others. Somewhere between the tears subtly falling from my eyes, I arrived at the place of reckoning. I was done explaining. I had taken accountability for my mistake. I had tried to bridge the gap between what they perceived and what was real.

It didn’t matter.

Because sometimes the real issue isn’t what you did, it’s who people have already decided you are.

Maybe I will always be seen as aggressive. Maybe my tone will always be called abrupt. Maybe my way of showing up in the world will always feel uncomfortable to systems that expect conformity without ever considering the person standing in front of them. Maybe they will always assume my intentions are nefarious first before ever giving me the benefit of the doubt

That realisation is a hard pill to swallow.

Not because I refuse accountability. I accept my imperfections. I acknowledge when I am wrong. The realisation is hard because there is a difference between growth and becoming someone else.

It feels like I have to literally be someone else to be accepted.

I can’t keep living in spaces where being myself requires constant defence.

I have to constantly be on my guard, looking out for the person who is trying to get me. It is tiresome trying to appease spaces where being accepted means reshaping who I am into someone more comfortable for others.

Where “Marsha” can only exist if she looks like someone else.

So, I made a decision.

I will continue to hold myself accountable.
I will continue to accept my imperfections.

But, I will also accept something else.

I am who I am.

And it is what it is.

This is not about denying anyone’s humanity. It is about protecting agency. It is about creating room for thoughtful conversation in a culture that often punishes questions. I want to discuss sexuality, identity, and media without turning human beings into political symbols.

My focus is agency, the capacity to act intentionally, make considered choices, and direct one’s life rather than being entirely determined by forces outside of one’s control. Agency requires reflection, self-regulation, responsibility for consequences, and the freedom to act without coercion.

In conversations about identity, biology matters. Predispositions may exist. At the same time, identity does not form through biology alone. Temperament, developmental stage, hormones, relationships, culture, and community all shape how we understand ourselves.

Biology Is Real. Environment Is, Too.

Biology alone does not determine our life choices or lifestyles. As human beings, we can choose how we want to live, regardless of built-in inclinations toward particular traits, behaviours, feelings, or outcomes that may exist before specific experiences occur. While biology plays a role, we are shaped by environment so profoundly that pretending we are untouched by it is not realistic.

Predisposition alone does not determine what a person will do with a tendency. For example, I may be predisposed to high blood pressure, but my environment and lifestyle choices can increase or decrease my likelihood of developing the condition. Environment can amplify, suppress, redirect, or leave a predisposition largely unchanged.

Sexual development is not imaginary. When puberty activates hormonal systems, desire emerges and attraction appears. However, those biological processes do not dictate life choices.

Human beings are not creatures driven purely by instinct. We can think critically, question suggestions, interpret what we are told, reinforce what resonates with us, and choose our behaviours. We align ourselves with narratives and adopt identities.

Environment matters enormously in that process because it shapes:

• What is normalized

• What is stigmatized

• What is rewarded

• What is visible

• What feels possible

• What language is available

In the modern world, media is not separate from environment. It is a central part of it. It reaches nearly every child and adult daily, often for hours at a time.
